A Practical Guide to Compression Wear Terms: Vest, Base Layer, Support Layer
Compression wear terminology can be confusing at a glance — here's a plain-language guide to the terms that actually matter: base layer, support layer, compression vest, and compression wear itself, and how they relate to each other.
Compression wear
The overall category: garments engineered with directional-stretch fabric to apply targeted pressure to the body, built for support and comfort rather than a change in outward appearance.
Base layer
Any garment worn closest to the skin, under other clothing. Not every base layer is compression wear — a plain undershirt is a base layer too — but a compression base layer combines the two: worn closest to the skin, and engineered for support.
Support layer
Functionally interchangeable with compression base layer in most contexts — it describes the same idea from the angle of what the garment does (support) rather than where it sits (base, closest to skin).
Compression vest
A specific product category: a sleeveless or short-sleeved compression garment covering the torso, typically the most structured item in a compression wardrobe, often with an adjustable closure system for fine-tuning fit and support level.
Understanding these terms makes it easier to search for, and talk about, exactly what a man actually needs — not just what a product happens to be called.
