How to Care for Compression Wear So It Keeps Its Shape

Compression wear keeps its shape longest when washed in cold water, air-dried rather than machine-dried, and rotated between at least two garments rather than worn and washed daily — heat is the single biggest threat to the spandex fibers that give compression fabric its structure.

The washing rule that matters most

Cold water, always. Hot water breaks down spandex fibers over repeated washes, which is the single fastest way a compression garment loses its tension and starts to feel more like an ordinary T-shirt. A gentle cycle with a mild detergent, no fabric softener — softener coats the fibers and reduces the fabric's breathability and grip.

Never the dryer

Heat from a machine dryer is even more damaging than hot water. Air-drying, laid flat or hung, keeps the fabric's compression profile intact for far longer. It takes a bit more time; it's the single biggest factor in whether a compression garment lasts one year or several.

Rotation matters more than most men think

Wearing and washing the same single garment daily accelerates fiber fatigue. Owning two or more pieces and rotating between them gives each garment recovery time between wears — the fabric's elasticity partially resets between uses, extending the life of the whole rotation.
